FLEMING'S MAY PROMOTED IN DISTRIBUTION

He will have broader responsibilities supporting Fleming's grocery wholesale distribution. May will also lead the Fleming teams that manage logistics, merchandising and procurement, information technology, services for the IGA and Piggly Wiggly segments, and marketing strategies for grocery wholesale. Under the new structure, Mike Walsh will continue to serve as president and CEO of convenience distribution. Both will report to Pete Willmott, interim president and CEO. Fleming said Rob Allen, interim chief operating officer for Fleming, retired on April 25. The interim chief operating officer position is not expected to be filled.
MASON JOINS BI-LO AS VP, MARKETING
MAULDIN, S.C. -- BI-LO here named Racquel Mason to the newly created position of vice president of marketing. Her responsibilities will include corporate strategy work, brand development and advertising. Most recently, Mason was vice president of marketing and public relations at Bruno's Supermarkets, Birmingham, Ala. She has also worked in brand management and consumer marketing at Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, N.J., and Procter & Gamble, Minneapolis.
BUSH APPOINTS PLAMANN TO NCB
WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush appointed Alfred A. Plamann to the National Cooperative Bank's board of directors. NCB is a cooperative financial services company chartered by Congress in 1978 to meet the needs of cooperative businesses in the United States. Plamann was confirmed on April 8 by the U.S. Senate for one of the three presidential-appointed seats on the 15-person board. He replaces Harry Bowie, president and chief executive officer of the Delta Foundation, Greenville, Miss. Plamann has served on the board previously as an elected member for six years and as chairman for two. Plamann is president and chief executive officer of Unified Western Grocers, Los Angeles. He also serves as a board member of the Weingart Center for the Homeless, a large homeless-advocacy facility.
WOOD JOINS HAGGEN AS GROUP VP
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Haggen here has named Jeff Wood to the newly created position of group vice president of administration. Most recently, Wood was chief operating officer for Larry's Markets, Seattle. Prior to that, he spent 30 years with QFC, serving most recently as group vice president, store operations/facilities.
SUPERVALU NAMES PRESIDENT OF SHOP 'N SAVE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here named Lee Armbuster president of Stop 'n Save, Pittsburgh. Armbuster will oversee operations of 18 corporate stores and maintain an affiliation with the 60 independent Shop 'n Save retailers in the Pittsburgh market. He reports directly to John Hooley, executive vice president/president and chief operating officer, retail food companies for Supervalu. Previously, Armbuster was vice president of Supervalu's home office general merchandise and health and beauty care team.
UNIFIED NAMES NEAL VP, TREASURER
LOS ANGELES -- Unified Western Grocers here has elected Christine Neal vice president, treasurer. Neal will assume responsibility for all treasury activities, including banking relationships. She will report directly to Richard Martin, executive vice president, finance and administration and chief financial officer. Prior to her recent election, Neal was an accounting and finance consultant. She assisted Unified during the 1999 merger of Los Angeles-based Certified Grocers and Portland, Ore.-based United Grocers. She also served as a member of the team that developed Unified's five-year capital plan. Unified also said Warren Fish was promoted to assistant treasurer, reporting to Neal. Previously, he was treasurer and assistant secretary of Grocers Capital Co., a subsidiary of Unified Western Grocers. He will retain those responsibilities along with new ones for internal cash management planning and control.
