WAL-MART PROMOTES COUGHLIN, DUKE

t Stores here said last week it has promoted Tom Coughlin, previously executive vice president, president and chief executive officer of the company's Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Club divisions, to executive vice president and vice chairman. In his new position, Coughlin will continue to oversee the U.S. operations of the company's discount stores, supercenters and warehouse clubs, and will also assume responsibility for logistics, real-estate development, global procurement and the company's online operation, walmart.com. He will continue to report to Lee Scott, Wal-Mart's president and CEO. The company also promoted Mike Duke, previously executive vice president of administration, to president and CEO of its Wal-Mart Stores division. Duke, who previously reported to Scott, will now report to Coughlin.

KMART NAMES LUKEN GENERAL COUNSEL

TROY, Mich. -- Kmart Corp. here said last week it has named Harold Luken senior vice president and general counsel, effective May 12. In his new position, Luken will be responsible for the company's legal and human resources department. Luken, previously managing director and general counsel at Banc of American Securities, Charlotte, N.C., will succeed Michael Macik, who is retiring after 32 years with the company. Macik originally retired in November 2000, and then rejoined Kmart in April 2002 to assist in the company's reorganization.

FORMER AMERICAN STORES CEO JOINS NCR BOARD

DAYTON, Ohio -- Victor Lund, former chairman and chief executive officer of American Stores before that company's 1999 merger with Albertsons, has been appointed to NCR Corp.'s board of directors here. He will also serve as a member of NCR's audit committee. Lund held a number of positions with American Stores before being named CEO, including chief financial officer and executive vice president. NCR also announced the resignation of board member James R. Long.
