FOOD LION ELEVATES GREEN TO COO

n here last week said it has promoted Cathy Green to chief operating officer. In her new position, Green has responsibility for Food Lion's retail operations, merchandising, marketing and distribution network. She reports to Rick Anicetti, Food Lion president and chief executive officer. Anicetti previously was also the COO. Prior to being named to her new post, Green was senior vice president of retail operations-north, overseeing about 600 stores. She came to Food Lion in 2002 from its sister supermarket chain, Hannaford Bros.

ADAMSEN REJOINS PENN TRAFFIC AS VP

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dave Adamsen, a longtime executive with Penn Traffic, has rejoined the retailer/wholesaler here as vice president of franchise/wholesale and bakery manufacturing, the company said. Adamsen, most recently the vice president of Dean Foods' Northeast region, previously served more than 20 years at Penn Traffic in a variety of management positions including president and general manager of the Curtiss Bakery and vice president of manufacturing.

AHOLD TAPS MCNALLY AS CIO

ZAANDAM, Netherlands -- Ahold here said it has appointed Dave McNally chief information officer. In his new role, McNally will advise the Ahold corporate executive board and senior business executives on the strategic role and adoption of information technology throughout the organization, according to Ahold. He was previously CIO for Ahold's U.S. Foodservice business. McNally succeeds Alex Gibbons, who has decided to leave the company for personal reasons.

GRIFFITH TO LEAD SAFEWAY-PORTLAND

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway here said last week it has named Kelly Griffith to succeed Lyle Waterman as president of the chain's Portland, Ore., division, effective Oct. 9. Waterman, who has been with Safeway 46 years, has led the Portland division since 2000. Although he will leave his division post next month, Safeway said Waterman will remain with the company on special assignment through the end of the year. Griffith is corporate senior vice president, produce and floral. He joined Safeway 25 years ago in the chain's Seattle division and been in his current role since 2004.

WHITE TO OVERSEE SAFEWAY BRANDS

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway here last week said it has named James D. White, 44, as senior vice president, corporate brands. He will oversee marketing, manufacturing, finance and outside sales functions for the company's store-brand products. White most recently was senior vice president for business development, North America, at Gillette Co., Boston, where he spent the past three years. Before that, he spent 15 years at Nestle Purina Petcare, where he worked on that company's private-label programs. White is slated to join Safeway shortly after the completion of Gillette's planned merger with Proctor & Gamble.
