As president, he succeeds Jeff Noddle, who remains chairman and chief executive officer. The COO position was vacant. Also, Supervalu named Jim Stoffel treasurer in addition to his role as vice president, financial planning. The treasury function had been filled by Sherry Smith, who remains senior vice president, finance.

SAFEWAY TAPS WAL-MART VETERAN LEWIS AS SR. VP

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- John A. Lewis, former chief financial officer of Wal-Mart International, was appointed to the newly created position of senior vice president, internal audit, for Safeway here, the retailer said last week. Lewis will have responsibility for the company's internal audit function and will report to Robert Edwards, chief financial officer, Safeway said. Lewis was executive vice president and CFO at Wal-Mart International since 2003 and prior to that was vice president and chief audit officer for the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer since 1996. Before joining Wal-Mart, Lewis spent 25 years as an auditor with Mercantile Stores Co.
