SAFEWAY SELECTS TECH INDUSTRY VETERAN FOR CFO

day named Robert Edwards executive vice president and chief financial officer, succeeding Vasant Prabhu, who left at the end of last year to become CFO at Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, White Plains, N.Y. Edwards most recently was executive vice president and CFO at Maxtor Corp., Malpitas, Calif., a maker of computer disk drives and data storage solutions. Before that, Edwards was with another technology firm, Imation Corp., Oakdale, Minn., where he served as senior vice president, CFO and chief administrative officer. Before Imation, he served in various capacities for 20 years at Santa Fe Pacific Corp., Schaumburg, Ill., and its affiliates. At Safeway, Edwards will oversee the company's finance, investor relations, information technology, real estate and legal functions. He will report to Steve Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

AHOLD NAMES TWO EXECUTIVES AT U.S. FOODSERVICE

ZAANDAM, Netherlands -- Ahold here last week said its U.S. Foodservice distribution subsidiary had named Robert Aiken executive vice president of strategy and governance and Gary Brown senior vice president of procurement. In his newly created position, Aiken will have responsibility for strategy, marketing and coordination of governance compliance plans across the company. He previously was president of Metz Baking Co., now a division of Sara Lee, Chicago. Brown, who fills a post that was left vacant last year when U.S. Foodservice dismissed several top executives after the division was found to be at the heart of a $1.2 billion accounting scandal, previously was a consultant for AlixPartners, a Southfield, Mich., turnaround firm.

WINN-DIXIE PROMOTES MEDINA TO DIVISION MANAGER

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores here said it named Joey Medina division manager of Winn-Dixie Montgomery, overseeing the operations of Winn-Dixie supermarkets in Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. He will report to John Sheehan, senior vice president of operations. Medina joined the company in 1984, and worked in all areas of retail operations, most recently serving as senior director of operations for Winn-Dixie. He replaces Curt Gore, who is no longer with the company.
