SNOLLAERTS NAMED PRESIDENT AT SMART & FINAL

it has named Etienne Snollaerts president and chief operating officer.

He succeeds Ross Roeder as president; Roeder, 65, will continue as chairman and chief executive officer. The post of COO has been vacant for several years.

Snollaerts, 47, has been an executive with France-based Casino Guichard-Perrachon (Groupe Casino), responsible for overseeing the company's North American investments. Groupe Casino, which has owned a majority equity interest in Smart & Final since 1991, currently owns a 60% stake in the company.

Snollaerts' responsibilities at Smart & Final will include oversight of store operations and supply chain. He will also continue as a company director, a post he has held since 1998.

Before joining Groupe Casino, Snollaerts was a management consultant in Belgium, Germany and Spain for London-based Alexander Proudfoot Co.

"Etienne has an exceptional record of success in food retailing and distribution, and as a result of his activities with Groupe Casino, he is already familiar with Smart & Final and our activities," Roeder said. "He joins us at an important juncture in Smart & Final's history, as we reposition our company to focus on our core western U.S. business."

MOODY JOINS PATHMARK BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here has added James L. Moody to the company's board of directors, increasing the size to seven members. Moody comes to Pathmark after spending the majority of his career at Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine. Most recently at Hannaford, Moody was chairman; from 1973 to 1992, he was also chief executive officer. Pathmark operates 143 stores in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia areas.

C&S TAPS FORMER SUPERVALU EXECUTIVES

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- C&S Wholesale Grocers here tapped two former executives from Supervalu's New England division after acquiring that business from Supervalu, Minneapolis, in a swap for Fleming's former Midwest operations. C&S hired Ken Ferrera as its senior vice president, retail services, a new position. Previously, Ferrera spent five years at Supervalu's New England division as vice president of marketing. Prior to that, he worked for 27 years at James Ferrera and Sons, Canton, Mass., where he served for seven years as president.

C&S also appointed Russell Zwanka to vice president of marketing and merchandising, another new position. He will be responsible for promotion and merchandising to the independent retailer division of the company. Most recently, Zwanka was the vice president of merchandising for Fleming Cos., Dallas. Within Fleming, he also held positions in procurement, convenience stores and category marketing. Prior to that, he worked in procurement and category management positions at Ahold's Bi-Lo supermarket chain.
