Food Lion Feeds Donates Meals to Jump-Start Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Food Lion Feeds has partnered with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the United States Postal Service (USPS) and food banks in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, to support the 24th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Throughout the week, Food Lion will make six 10,000 meal donations, including both fresh and non-perishable food, to local feeding agencies in our communities.

“At Food Lion, we’re passionate about helping to end hunger in our local communities,” says John Garlick, division vice president for Food Lion's Northern market. “As a grocer, we know there are families in our communities who are making tough choices to put food on their tables. At Food Lion, we believe no one should have to choose between dinner and paying rent or medicine and buying groceries. That's why we are committed to supporting important hunger-relief campaigns like Stamp Out Hunger.”

“As letter carriers, we are honored to be able to help people in need,” say  Fredric Rolando, NALC president. “On a daily basis we see the struggles in the communities we serve, and we believe it’s important to do what we can to help."

In an effort to help raise awareness about Stamp Out Hunger on May 14, Food Lion has partnered with local food banks to make donations to jump-start the annual campaign. The dates and times include:

May 9: Newark Post Office at 3 p.m. in Newark, Del.

May 10: Fredericksburg Area Food Bank at 10 a.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.

May 11: Feeding America Southwest Virginia at 10 a.m. in Salem, Va.

May 11: Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore at 11:30 a.m. in Norfolk, Va.

May 11: Maryland Food Bank at 10 a.m. in Baltimore

May 12: FeedMore at 10 a.m. in Richmond, Va.

In addition to donating 60,000 meals, Food Lion has also provided specially-marked Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive grocery bags to 4.3 million residents in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, for residents to place their donations in for USPS pickup on May 14. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive comes at an important time for local food banks and feeding agencies in these states, when demand peaks in the summer months as children are out of school. The food collected from local resident donations during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia will be distributed to local feeding agencies near where the donations are given.

Food Lion partners with local food banks and feeding agencies to help raise awareness about the issue of hunger and help end hunger in its local communities. Through Food Lion Feeds, the grocer has committed to providing 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020.
