Cancer is a disease affecting the lives of millions of Americans, and Harris Teeter is partnering with the American Cancer Society during the month of March to help the nonprofit organization create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Thanks in part to the Society, over 11 million cancer survivors are celebrating birthdays this year. March 1 – 31, 2012, all Harris Teeter locations will sell $1, $3 and $5 donation cards in support of the Society and its work to save lives by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. By participating in the donation card campaign, you can help the Society continue to make progress against cancer and save hundreds of lives each day. The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a full century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. The Society estimates that more than 1.6 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Today, the five-year survival rate has surpassed 66 percent for all cancers combined, and death rates from cancer have been declining steadily since the early 1990s thanks to advances in treatment, prevention and early detection. Thanks to the organization and its three million volunteers fighting for every birthday threatened by cancer in the community, cancer patients are living longer and celebrating more birthdays. The Society saves lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or through early detection; helping people get well by being there for them during and after diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discoveries; and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. Harris Teeter invites you to be a part of the cause. “Our shoppers have shown us time and time again their generosity and willingness to get involved in nonprofit organizations fighting to make a difference in their communities,” said Danna Jones, communication specialist serving Harris Teeter. “We are honored to be associated with an organization like American Cancer Society so committed to the prevention and cure of a disease that affects so many of our customers.” “Our goal for this donation card campaign is not only to raise money for research, but we also hope to inspire our shoppers to learn more about cancer prevention and ways to finds treatment,” added Jones.
