CINCINATTI — After ridding its infant and toddler products of Bisphenol A beginning in 2007, Kroger Co. here is moving to BPA-free cans for its corporate brands.
Many cans have a thin lining containing a small amount of BPA to ensure the safety of the product, the retailer said. The policy comes out of an abundance of caution.
“While there is no conclusive scientific evidence that this minimal exposure to BPA in can linings poses any risks to consumers, Kroger has begun a process that we believe will result in the removal of BPA in the linings of canned goods in all of our corporate brand items,” said Kroger in a statement.
By the end of 2011, Kroger will have transitioned its receipt tape papers to BPA-free. While much of its current receipt tape doesn't contain BPA, some suppliers use processes that result in the presence of BPA in very small quantities, according to the chain.
