LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets here will build stores this year in the South Carolina counties of Lancaster and York, moves that indicate the retailer is marching closer toward the Charlotte, N.C., market.

The stores are to be built in the South Carolina towns of Indian Land and Tega Cay, both suburbs of Charlotte.

The stores will both measure 49,000 square feet, Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous told SN Tuesday. Brous would not confirm an opening date for either location, although the Charlotte Observer newspaper said both are expected to open later this year.

Brous said the chain did not have current plans to open stores in North Carolina. Publix currently operates in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
