FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Rogers Markets here has sold nine of its 13 stores to Supervalu, its Minneapolis-based wholesaler, as part of a downsizing effort. Supervalu subsequently has converted two of the nine stores to units of Scott's Foods, a corporate chain here, and is maintaining the other seven under the Rogers name while seeking operators for those units, William Rogers, president of Rogers Markets, told SN. All the stores sold are in the 28,000- to 35,000-square-foot range. Of the four remaining Rogers stores, three are in the 15,000- to 20,000-square-foot range and one is 6,000 square feet; the company is also building a fifth store of 5,000 square feet. "We plan to concentrate on serving underserved communities where there's no other grocery-store presence at this time," Rogers told SN, "and to concentrate on our real-estate business, which was accounting for 55% to 60% of our assets." In 1994, Rogers' volume was about $145 million; the company's four remaining stores account for sales of about $10 million, Rogers said.
