HANOVER, Pa. — Weis Markets, Sunbury, Pa., announced that one of its stores here has earned a silver certification award from the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership — the first Pennsylvania supermarket to receive this award.
The certification recognizes that the store achieved GreenChill benchmarks such as using refrigerants that do not damage the Earth’s protective ozone layer; reducing the size of refrigerant charge by at least 50% from the industry average; reducing annual refrigerant emissions to 15% or less of total store capacity; and testing refrigeration systems for adherence to GreenChill’s leak tightness guidelines.
“While we have long focused on ways to conserve energy and lessen the environmental impact of our stores, this project represents an increased commitment on our part,” said David J. Hepfinger, Weis Markets’ president and chief executive officer. “In the coming years, we will look for opportunities to incorporate these technologies into the stores we build or upgrade.”
