SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets here is preparing to upgrade its loyalty card to a new program that rewards its best shoppers with personalized offers.

The retailer here has begun shipping new Weis Gold Cards to shoppers who spend $67 or more weekly at Weis, a group representing the top 20% of shoppers at the chain, Dennis Curtin, a spokesman for Weis, told SN on Wednesday.

Weis will soon begin sending Gold card recipients personalized coupon offers via mail and email each month, Curtin said.

"We believe it will drive sales among our highest spending customers — and that we will do it by offering our customers strong values that help them save money," he said.

Weis Markets, which operates 161 stores in five states, marks its 100th anniversary in 2012.
