Whole Foods Market is recalling organic raw hazelnuts sold in bulk through its stores in California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington due to possible contamination with salmonella.

AUSTIN — Whole Foods Market is recalling organic raw hazelnuts sold in bulk through its stores in California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington due to possible contamination with salmonella.

Non-organic dry roasted hazelnuts sold in California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington are also being recalled along with non-organic raw hazelnuts sold in Oregon and Washington.

The potential for salmonella contamination was discovered during a routine product sampling at the plant where the nuts were shelled. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

Whole Foods Market customers who have purchased the recalled product since Oct. 12 in the states listed above may return the item for a full refund.
