N.J. Retailers Can Offer Fuel Rewards

TRENTON, N.J. — A bill signed into law Monday authorizes New Jersey food retailers to host fuel reward programs, and fuel dealers to distribute coupons good for items at their supermarket partner’s stores.

“We’re happy to bring this practice into the 21st century,” Linda Doherty, president of the New Jersey Food Council, told SN.

Programs that allow consumers to accrue points on their supermarket loyalty card that can be redeemed for fuel discounts were previously restricted under an 80-year-old state statute.

Stop & Shop is one regional player that stands to benefit. Although its Gas Rewards program is driving additional traffic to stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York, until now, consumers in New Jersey were unable to take part.
