Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Soopers/City Market, Ralphs, West Coast Food 4 Less locations, Smith's in southern Nevada and New Mexico, and QFC stores and warehouses have issued a product removal for chicken that originated at the Foster Farms processing facilities implicated by FSIS. Kroger has also alerted customers to return such products for a full refund.
The chicken products can be identified by USDA mark of inspection numbers P6137, P6137A and P7632.
The outbreak has so far sickened 278 in 18 states.
Editor's Note: This story headline and the story has been updated to replace the word "recall." A Kroger official said the company's action is not technically a recall.
"Our action was based on the USDA public health alert. Because neither the supplier nor the USDA initiated a recall, we issued a product removal. For our customers, the end result is the same — the product has been removed from sale," Kroger spokesperson Keith Dailey told SN by email.
