CINCINNATI — Store brands from Kroger here, Safeway, Giant Eagle and H.E. Butt Grocery Co. were among the ground-turkey products included in the massive recall this week, according to the supplier.

Kroger issued a statement explaining that recalled ground turkey sold under the Honeysuckle White and Kroger store-brand labels were sold in Kroger-owned stores in states throughout the country, with the exception of some areas in the Pacific Northwest. The company said it removed the product from its shelves and placed signs in its stores, and said it would notify customers who purchased the products through automated telephone calls and/or receipt messages.

Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway, meanwhile, issued a statement saying that some products at its Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas were part of the recall, but no other Safeway divisions were affected.

As previously reported, Cargill Value Added Meats, a division of Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., said it was voluntarily recalling 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey meat after a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened about 79 people and caused one death. As of Thursday, Michigan and Ohio had the highest number of cases of Salmonella poisoning, with 10 each, according to report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Texas had nine, California had six, and the rest were scattered across 22 other states.

In addition to store brands, other brand names included Riverside Ground Turkey, Natural Lean Ground Turkey, Fit & Active Lean Ground Turkey, Spartan Ground Turkey and Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey Burgers, according to Cargill.
