RIDGEWOOD, N.Y. -- Western Beef here reported that sales and earnings decreased in the second quarter and half-year ended June 30.

For the six months, sales dropped 3.7% to $140.6 million from $146 million. Net income declined 4.7% to $1.95 million from $2.05 million.

During the second quarter, the company took on charges of approximately $500,000 related to two store openings and the construction of a third store.

"The [quarterly] sales decline results primarily from a decrease in same-store sales, and the closing of a small wholesale produce business," the company said.
