Humane Certification Program Developed for Livestock

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Temple Grandin, known for her work with processors to ensure humane treatment of livestock, has developed a certification program with Niman Ranch that will evaluate sustainability practices as well as humane practices.
Starting in August 2009, companies that wish to carry the certification seal will be audited on 21 principles which must be met in order to receive certification. Niman Ranch, in a statement, said it plans to be one of the first companies to be audited to carry the certification seal for its humanely and sustainably raised natural beef, pork, lamb and chicken.
Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University.
