Grocers wasted no time starting off 2023 with big store count growth.

WGB’s new store openings map for January shows 29 new locations, up from 17 in December.

But one thing has stayed the same: Aldi remains the growth leader.

Of the 29 new stores on the map in January, the German discount grocer accounted for more than one third.

Indeed, a report from commercial real estate and property investment firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) last month found that Aldi opened more stores than any other grocery retailer in 2022, with 49 new locations. That’s nearly two times the count of runner-up Grocery Outlet at 28 new units.

Still, though, that 2022 total fell short of Aldi’s goal to open 150 new markets by the end of the year, the report noted.

Publix added two stores, as did Meijer and hybrid retailer Foxtrot, according to January’s map.
