Big Y Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce the grand opening celebration for their first wholly owned Big Y Express Gas & Convenience store located at 202 West St. in Pittsfield, MA adjacent to their World Class Market there. Big Y has another fuel and convenience location that opened in Lee, MA in 2013 in a joint venture with F.L. Roberts & Co. This new location also boasts savings on fuel as well as good quality convenience food and beverages. This location contains 12 gas pumps with 87, 89, and 93 octane fuel as well as diesel at every dispenser. Free air machines are available for tire inflation at all times. Big Y Express is open from 5AM-midnight, seven days a week and 365 days a year. Inside the 1574 square foot store, selections include donuts, pastries, and fresh “in-store baked” muffins and cookies. Coffee selections include Green Mountain Coffee in various flavors and a fresh ground gourmet coffee machine that makes lattes and cappuccinos made to order! Food offerings include fresh fruits, gourmet over-stuffed sandwiches, hot soups, salads, hot pizza, and an assortment of fresh snack items in a convenient “cup” packaging to enjoy while on the run. Other beverage options include a selection of top notch cold and hot teas, iced coffee, fountain sodas and a multiflavor soda machine with up to 12 different flavor combinations. One of the most popular beverage choices is the F’Real milk shake machine that makes real milkshakes in a variety of flavors. Of course, the location also has a selection of Big Y label milk, bread, numerous other cold beverages, candy, snacks, tobacco products, lottery, ice, and even propane. Big Y’s Silver Savings Club members receive 5 cents per gallon discount with their membership cards every day. Mike Cahoon, store manager, has almost 30 years of retail experience with Big Y. He has trained in the Lee location before opening this site this past winter in a soft opening to kick off the $1.9 million project. On Thursday, May 7 at 2:30PM, company officials will be on hand to cut the ribbon and begin a month long celebration. In addition to free products and discounts, several local media outlets will be helping to celebrate along with their neighbor, Big Y World Class Market. Customers there should be on the lookout for additional fuel discounts throughout the month. Big Y hired 11 new part time employees from the area to help staff the store. They were trained in nearby Big Y stores with emphasis on customer service and technical training as well as safety and food sanitation procedures. According to Big Y’s Big Y president and COO, Charles L. D’Amour, “We are always looking to bring our customers even more! Indeed, we are excited to not only help our customers save on their fueling needs but also make life easier by offering convenience items that our customers can grab on the run. This is especially important given the hectic lives and schedules we all lead! Big Y Express showcases our expertise in food and service along with new fuel savings for all. We are excited to be able to bring this new concept to the Pittsfield area.” Headquartered in Springfield, MA, Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England. Proud to be family owned and operated, they currently operate 63 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 10,000 employees. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a "Y".
