There are signs that a third Wegmans supermarket may open in New York City.

We are talking real signs, as the West Side Rag blog is reporting Wegmans signage is now up in windows where a Bed Bath & Beyond used to do business between West 64th and 65th streets.

According to the New York Post, Bed Bath & Beyond used a vertical transportation system at the location that consists of two large elevators and a Vermaport Cart Conveyor capable of moving shopping carts between floors.

The Post also reported company chairman Danny Wegman signed a long-term lease for the space, which is over 58,000 square feet, back in February. At the time, Wegmans said the property was a personal investment.

“In February of this year, a long-term lease was signed for the space at 1932 Broadway where crews are clearing out the space and items left behind by the previous tenant,” Wegmans said in an emailed statement to Supermarket News. “We continue to remain focused on our Astor Place store and growing our customer base in Manhattan.”

A Wegmans store in Manhattan officially opened in October 2023 on Astor Place. The 87,500-square-foot store reflects the original architecture of the historic Wannamaker building on Broadway.

However, the store became the center of a controversy in February 2024 when a lawsuit was filed against the Rochester, N.Y.-based retailer because allegedly the fish market inside is a knockoff of an East Village fish and sushi business called Osakana.

Some 4,000 people signed a petition a week later to shut down the fish market following the claims of fraud, breach of contracts, trademark infringement, and more.

The first Wegmans store in New York City was powered up in Brooklyn in October 2019.

Wegmans operates 110 stores as of June 18 according to ScrapeHero.
