After a very busy March, new grocery store openings slowed significantly in April, according to tracking during the past 30 days by WGB editors.

There were just 14 new openings in April, down from 40 the month before. It’s been the slowest month for openings of 2023.

As is becoming habit, Aldi led the pack with four new stores during April after debuting 17 new locations in March.

Publix opened two stores last month, as did deep discounter Grocery Outlet.

April’s openings were fairly well spread out around the country, rather than being concentrated in a specific region.
