Hy-Vee plans to open six new Dollar Fresh format stores in six former Shopko locations in Iowa that the grocer has purchased. The stores—in Hampton, Cresco, Oelwein, Waukon, Dyersville and Vinton—will reopen under the new banner by the end of the summer.

Dollar Fresh was first introduced by West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee in fall 2018. The stores are designed to offer customers in smaller communities a fresh, new product selection at low prices. The format also includes some Hy-Vee staples, such as grocery items, a bakery section with a full range of fresh-baked items and ready-to-eat meal offerings, as well as some new features, such as a dollar section and a wall of value.

“As we continue to innovate, we’re taking a look at the needs of our rural communities,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee's chairman of the board, president and CEO. “At our Dollar Fresh stores, our customers will be greeted with helpful smiles that deliver a great customer experience while also encountering a wide selection of quality products at low prices.”

In addition to the first Dollar Fresh location in Osceola, Iowa, Hy-Vee also operates stores with the format in Centerville, Creston, Emmetsburg, Osceola and Toledo, Iowa; and in West Point, Neb. All were either remodeled former Hy-Vee locations or former Shopko stores.
