In keeping with April’s slow pace, grocery store openings in May started out sluggishly. But they picked up steam as the month neared its end.

That’s according to monthly tracking of new supermarkets by Winsight Grocery Business editors.

In May, WGB noted 25 grocery grand openings—once again led by Aldi (five new stores), followed by Publix (four) and Meijer (three).

In April, WGB counted just 14 new stores. But there were 40 openings reported in March.
