Publix Super Markets on Wednesday opened its newest store in the Atlanta neighborhood of Summerhill, Georgia, bringing a much-needed grocery store to an area that has been without a major supermarket chain for a long time.

The new Publix, which included a special ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning, included brief remarks from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and other local officials.

“We are very excited for the opening of our newest Publix at Summerhill,” said Nicole Krauss, Publix media relations manager, in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to provide premier service and quality products to long-time customers and welcome new ones to this unique location."

The 48,000-square-foot store is located at 672 Hank Aaron Dr., SE in Atlanta and offers departments for grocery, dairy, frozen food, seafood, meat and fresh produce, as well as a full-service bakery, deli and pharmacy with a drive-thru. The new location will also offer contactless pay options, grocery delivery via Instacart and pharmacy delivery.

Lakeland, Florida-based Publix now operates 206 stores in Georgia, according to the grocer’s website.

The chain's penetration into the state of Georgia has seen several new store openings. Earlier this year, Publix opened its long-time-coming location at Covington Town Center in Covington, Georgia. The 48,000-square-foot store in Newton County is located east of Atlanta.

Publix currently operates 1,345 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The employee-owned retailer will soon expand to its eighth state of Kentucky, where it will go up against long-established market leaders Kroger and Walmart.

Publix first announced its march into Kentucky in 2021. Last June, the grocery retailer broke ground in Louisville, at 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd., in The Terra Crossing Shopping Center, which will be the chain’s first Kentucky location. The store is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
