An interim committee of Kentucky state lawmakers has formed to discuss modernizing liquor sales in the state by allowing grocery stores to sell wine and liquor.
A story published in WKYT, a news organization in Lexington, Ky., reported that the state now only allows beer sales in grocery stores.
Some larger chains like Kroger get around the state law by building standalone liquor stores adjacent to the grocery store.
Shannon Stiglitz, senior vice president of government affairs for the Kentucky Retail Federation, said 39 states allow wine sales in grocery stores, and 19 states allow wine and spirit sales.
“We’re talking about growing vital retail businesses in all our communities,” Stiglitz said.
