DENVER -- Gov. Bill Ritter this week signed a bill that allows retailers to offer discounts on fuel, according to news reports. Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., which had previously discontinued a gas discount because of a preexisting law that prohibited such promotions, immediately started up a program where its Club Card shoppers who bought $50 at the store in one trip could get 10 cents off per gallon of gas. “With fuel prices on the rise, the timing could not have been better, and customers recognize and appreciate the value we‘re offering,” said Kris Staaf, a Safeway spokeswoman, in an Associated Press story. Kroger division King Soopers was also expected to announce a fuel discount program, AP reported.
