WASHINGTON — Counterfeit Colgate toothpaste sold in some Northeastern dollar stores has been recalled, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported yesterday. MS USA Trading, North Bergen, N.J., an importer, has said the products may contain a poisonous chemical found in antifreeze, according to press reports. Colgate said the counterfeit toothpaste is labeled as “Manufactured in South Africa,” and that the company does not import from that country. The packages contain misspellings such as “isclinically,” “SOUTH AFRLCA” and “South African Dental Assoxiation,” Colgate noted. The items include Regular, Gel, Triple and Herbal varieties. “Counterfeit toothpaste is not manufactured or distributed by Colgate and has no connection to the company whatsoever,” a Colgate statement said. “Colgate is working closely with the U.S. FDA to help to identify those responsible for the counterfeit product.” Consumers were given a toll-free number to call: 1-800-468-6502.
