LEBANON, Ky. — Higdon’s IGA here is giving its prepared-food sales a lift – and maybe attracting some new customers — with delivery of lunches to three nearby senior centers.

“We bid on this and won. It’s a federally funded program providing free lunches at senior [day activity] centers in Marion County,” Jimmy Higdon, owner of Higdon’s IGA, told SN. “It brings us in about $500 a week. There’s not a lot of profit, but it’s worth it to us. Every penny counts, and it’s good exposure.”

The single-unit retailer has to adhere to a weekly nutrition-rich menu provided by state/federal agencies, but Higdon said that’s not a problem.

“We’re cooking a variety of things every day anyway.” Higdon’s, in this town of 6,000, sets itself apart two big chains with its from-scratch cooking.
