PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Kings Super Markets here has launched a new, exclusive eye-catching back-to-school treat for kids — 6-ounce Sesame Street character cupcakes.

The handcrafted cupcakes sport the Sesame Street characters’ unique fur, made of butter cream icing in the bright colors associated with the Sesame Street gang. Four characters — Elmo, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster — are represented. An exclusive at Kings, the cupcakes are made of yellow cake with vanilla-flavored icing. They’re packed two to a clamshell package, and retail for $4.99.

The colorful cupcakes, merchandised in Kings’ in-store bakeries, have a featured spot in the 24-unit chain’s current ad circular.

“They’re a little big to pack in a school lunch. I think of them more as an after-school treat,” Kenneth Downey, Sr., Kings’ director of bakery sales and merchandising, told SN in a recent interview.

See the Fresh Market section of Supermarket News on Sept. 6 for a profile of Kings’ in-store bakeries. The profile will also be featured on SN's website the week of Sept. 6.
