SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets’ private-brand foods now have zero grams of added trans fat per serving, it announced Monday. During the past two years, the retailer has modified the recipes for 295 items.
The retailer has also worked to improve the overall nutrition value of select store-brand items in its 4,000-product line so that more meet or exceed the positive health attributes of alternative choices.
Hannaford Tomato & Basil Marinara Pasta Sauce, for example, now earns three stars on Hannaford’s Guiding Stars scale, Hannaford Apple Cereal Bar (two stars), Hannaford Reduced Fat Peanut Butter Spread and Hannaford Plain Bread Crumbs (both one star). The number of private-brand products that earn at least one star has increased by more than 10% since 2008.
“Our shoppers want choices that help them save money and eat better, and the Hannaford brand can help on both counts,” said Julie Greene, Hannaford director of healthy living, in a statement. “We’ve been working to enhance the nutritional quality of our private brand and are pleased to offer more high-quality choices than ever that support healthy lifestyles.”
