Dollar Tree is eliminating “fewer than 90 positions” at its corporate headquarters in Chesapeake, Virginia, as the discounter moves to outsource its customer-service operations, a company spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

The news was first reported by local media, following Dollar Tree’s mandatory posting of a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice last month.

“We can confirm fewer than 90 positions are being eliminated as we establish an outsourced model for our Enterprise Contact Center,” the Dollar Tree spokesperson said in a statement to WGB. “We are providing transition support for affected associates, including severance pay and outplacement services.”

The discounter retailer, which also owns the Family Dollar banner, has undergone a number of changes in recent years, including the move to a $1.25 price point in November 2021.

About a year ago, the retailer announced a reconstituted board, naming former Dollar General CEO Rick Dreiling executive chairman. Dreiling would be named CEO, replacing Mike Witynski, in January of this year.

Last June, Dollar Tree announced that its COO, CIO, chief legal officer and chief strategy officer had all departed and that the CFO would leave his post once a successor had been named.

The retailer added another Dollar General veteran to its ranks just last week, as Mike Kindy assumed the role of chief supply chain officer.

Last month, the retailer’s longtime accounting chief, Katleen Mallas, tendered her resignation.

Dollar Tree also quietly replaced its top lawyer, a move first reported by Bloomberg Law this week.

Former Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) member Janet Dhillon left her Dollar Tree post in February, after just four months, according to her LinkedIn resume.

John Mitchell Jr., the retailer’s senior deputy general counsel, is also now the company’s corporate secretary, according to Dollar General’s May 2 proxy statement. He is now serving as the company’s acting general counsel, Bloomberg reported.

In March, Dollar Tree said it had opened a test kitchen as it seeks to launch hundreds of private-label products in a major push into food-and-beverage sales.

A company spokesperson told WGB it would provide updates on the progress of those initiatives during an investor conference on June 21.

Dollar Tree operates more than 16,000 stores and has more than 200,000 employees in 48 states and five Canadian provinces.
