PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle will be working with the nonprofit Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to create a sustainable sourcing strategy for its wild and farmed seafood.

As part of this partnership, SFP will evaluate Giant Eagle’s sourcing and then, together with the retailer, move toward the goal of having Giant Eagle’s suppliers participate in SFP’s Fisheries Improvement Projects and Aquaculture Improvement Projects.

“Giant Eagle is committed to providing a wide variety of the freshest and highest quality seafood while being good stewards of the marine environment and fisheries around the world,” Giant Eagle Seafood Director Rich Castle said in a release. “Our partnership with SFP will help us ensure that we source our seafood responsibly, and protect the environment and the food supply for future generations. We look forward to delivering actionable next steps on how we can further improve our seafood procurement strategy in the coming months.”

Giant Eagle sees this partnership as building on its current sustainable seafood policy and its line of Eco Certified farm-raised Atlantic salmon. In the past, Giant Eagle worked with the World Wildlife Fund, through a one-year agreement, to develop a sustainable seafood strategy.
