Most Americans would like to purchase sustainable seafood, according to the latest Truven Health Analytics-NPR Health Poll.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said it was important that the seafood they buy is sustainable, while 21% said it was very important. In addition, 77% said sustainable fishing in general was important or very important.

About half of those surveyed said they would pay more for sustainable seafood; 22% would pay a 10-20% premium.

However, Americans are also skeptical about sustainable claims on seafood. Two-thirds said they were only somewhat confident about sustainability labels, and 19% were not at all confident.

Respondents’ seafood consumption varied widely. While 24% said they rarely or never eat seafood, 30% eat it four times per month.
