The five Mars Supermarkets locations in Baltimore County, Md., acquired by Weis Markets will close Friday and reopen under Weis banner on Thursday, Aug. 4, the Sunbury, Pa.-based company said Thursday.

The acquired locations include two stores in Dundalk and individual units in Essex, Arbutus and Carney. More than 500 former Mars employees will join the new Weis store teams.

“We are excited to steadily grow within Baltimore County and will make this transition as seamless as possible for the community and our new associates,” Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets’ COO, said. “Our goal is continuity; we will continue to offer a wide variety of local products carried in Mars stores. We are also thrilled that more than 500 Mars associates will join our Weis Markets family. We look forward to sharing our commitment of value, quality and customer service.”

The newly converted Weis Markets stores will add more than 3,000 Weis brand products. Weis Markets said it would continue to partner with local growers to provide shoppers fresh and affordable food including a wide selection of organic produce, baked goods, quality meats and fresh dairy items.

Weis Markets also plans to finalize the purchase of 38 Food Lion stores in September, six of which are located in the Baltimore region. Once those reopen as Weis locations, the company will operate 15 stores in the Baltimore region, essentially tripling its presence in the community within a few months’ time.
