Food Lion Sees Less Energy Usage in Refrigeration System Test

Food Lion has observed a 2% to 3% reduction in energy consumption in a low-temperature secondary-loop refrigeration system, in comparison to the energy consumed by a standard DX refrigeration system, said Susan Sollenberger, Food Lion’s director of equipment purchasing, maintenance and energy.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion here has observed a 2% to 3% reduction in energy consumption in a low-temperature secondary-loop refrigeration system, in comparison to the energy consumed by a standard DX refrigeration system, said Susan Sollenberger, Food Lion’s director of equipment purchasing, maintenance and energy. The secondary loop system, provided by Hill Phoenix, Conyers, Ga., is being tested at a Food Lion store in Montpelier, Va. The energy consumption of the system was measured for the summer months ending in September, she said. Food Lion is sharing data on the system as part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, which was officially launched this week in Washington. The secondary loop system uses carbon dioxide as a secondary refrigerant.
