Experience the smooth, creamy flavor of Muenster cheese! Made with fresh Wisconsin milk, this semi-soft cheese melts delightfully on sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas. Versatile and delicious, it’s perfect for noshing and adding to your favorite recipes!
Buholzer Brothers® Muenster cheese is a semi-soft, cow’s milk cheese known for its smooth, pale yellow interior and distinctive orange rind, which is created using annatto, a natural coloring agent. It has a mild, creamy, and slightly salty flavor that becomes sharper as it ages. Muenster has a fairly high moisture content, making it exceptionally smooth and meltable.
While the American version of Muenster cheese is milder and more commercialized, it is inspired by the traditional French Munster cheese, which is much stronger in aroma and taste. Applications of Muenster Cheese are best when melted on grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, mac and cheese, and pizza. Another popular use is to buy sliced Muenster for cold sandwiches to add a mild, yet rich flavor. As cheese boards have become more popular, it pairs well with fresh fruits (grapes, apples, pears), and nuts. It complements mild and spicy cured meats like salami or prosciutto. For snacking, it can be cubed and incorporated into cheese sauces, quiches or casseroles.
When choosing a piece of muenster cheese, you should look for a uniform orange rind, as it is a key characteristic of Muenster, and buyers want consistency in color and thickness. The interior should be smooth and free of large cracks. Since muenster is not pressed, there may be very small cracks which industry refers to as “mechanical openings”. The inside will be a white to pale yellow color which provides a nice contrast to the vibrant orange outside coloring. Buholzer Brothers® Muenster will not disappoint, it delivers a high quality, consistent piece of cheese every time that has all the characteristics that we described in a convenient, easy to open and resealable package. The perfect shape for slicing on crackers or cubing for charcuterie boards. It has been over 40 years of crafting Buholzer Brothers Muenster Cheese by Master Cheesemakers who are certified specifically in the art of producing muenster cheese. It is something that they take great pride in.
No matter what type of cheese that is made it all starts with milk. Buholzer Brothers® Muenster Cheese can boast that it is made with only the freshest Wisconsin cow’s milk. The milk supply is sourced within a hour range to the manufacturing plant and is pumped directly into the plant’s milk silos that same day. The milk is used in production as soon as possible as there is always more milk supply coming in seven days a week. Buholzer Brothers® Muenster is fortunate to have such a rich supply of cow’s milk that is sourced from local family farms, some that have been passed down through many generations. Which is important and proves how much hard work, care and dedication to farming in our community there is and produces only the highest quality of milk. We value those farm families, like our own family, going four generations strong of cheesemaking since 1925.
Buholzer Brothers® muenster is produced in a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant that uses automation to make a uniform piece of cheese so there is less scrap or waste when it is packaged or sliced. Curds are gently poured into rectangular forms and knit together as whey drains out and it becomes a rectangular block. The cheese is then placed in a saltwater brine to pick up salt overnight. The brine process has a consistent temperature and has a precise level of salt to make sure that each loaf of cheese gets the proper amount of flavor.
Buholzer Brothers® Muenster cheese comes in a variety of sizes. There are long-john loaves for slicing, six-pound loaves for behind the glass in the deli or foodservice and restaurant applications. The retail size is an eight-ounce cracker cut style. All have the creamy and mild flavor that performs amazingly with whichever application needed in a recipe or on its own for snacking.
Muenster cheese has such a wide range of uses and has mass appeal to all age demographics from little kids who love a warm melted sandwich to a food connoisseur who uses it in a specialty cream sauce and all the people in between that cut it up for snacking and entertainment. It is one of the most likeable and versatile cheeses that are offered in the market and now you know which brand is the best.
