Chipotle Mexican Grill, the chain famous for its big burritos, has taken a rare step in the world of fast-casual restaurants by adding a sustainable agriculture advisor to its roster. Bill Niman, founder of Niman Ranch, will fill the new role. Since 2001, Niman Ranch has provided Chipotle with naturally raised pork.
According to Chipotle CEO Steve Ells, Niman will help the company “improve the quality of the ingredients we use, broaden our commitment to sustainable agriculture, and provide another voice to help carry our message of making food from sustainable sources available and affordable.”
Ethics and sustainability have been differentiating points for Chipotle ever since the first store opened, in 1993. The chain sources humanely raised pork, chicken and beef that contain no hormones or antibiotics. The company is also expanding its use of local and organic ingredients.
