SCARBOROUGH, MaineHannaford Supermarkets is partnering with recycling service provider Clynk on the Maine Recycles Championship fundraiser for schools.

Participants will compete to collect the most bottles and cans between Feb. 26 and April 29, using bags with school-specific tags and pouches provided by Clynk. Contestants must fill the bags with Maine returnable cans and bottles, and bring them to any Hannaford store featuring Clynk.

Hannaford stores serve as the exclusive staging and compensation hub for the Clynk service that lets users drop off their recyclables in bar coded bags, rather than loading them one by one into a machine. The value of the recyclables is then credited to the consumer's online account. In the case of the contest, schools will be credited every nickel earned.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning schools in two tiers: 400 students or more and fewer than 400 students. One school in each tier will receive a grand prize of $2,000; second-prize is $1,000; and third place, $500. Students can track their schools’ progress and see the environmental impact of their recycling at www.clynk.com.

Clynk has also created six educational modules to teach Maine students about the importance and science of recycling. Each comes with a lesson guide that can be used at home or in the classroom.
