PRINCETON, N.J. — McCaffrey's Market has launched a program that recycles leftover fresh food and a variety of packaging materials into fertilizer products.
Employees have been trained to use special green receptacles placed throughout the retailer's store here, and a dedicated compost compactor has been installed to accept and hold the waste for pickup.
McCaffrey's expects to recycle up to 65% of its total waste load, according to Rocco D'Antonio, business development manager for Penn Jersey Paper Co. and a principal in Organic Diversion, a recycling solutions firm that coordinated the effort.
The compost is being processed by Converted Organics, which will bag and deliver the finished, all-natural product back to McCaffrey's for retail sale.
