THE 2019 POWER 25 TOP BANNERS: DOLLAR TREE, FAMILY DOLLAR HQ: CHESAPEAKE, VA. STORE COUNT: 15,237
There’s no doubt Dollar Tree is working a little harder these days. In particular, the Chesapeake, Va.-based parent of the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar brands took more aggressive action to address stubborn softness at the Family Dollar banner, opting to close or rebrand hundreds of locations in a move officials described as the final step before taking what is left of the chain back into growth mode. The company also said it would begin experimenting with multiple price points in its namesake Dollar Tree banner—a strategy advocated for by activist investors who’d grown tired of the company’s seeming lack of progress since it acquired Family Dollar in 2015. Dollar Tree’s road back will be behind the promising H2 store model, which incorporates a $1 Dollar Tree-branded values section and an increased emphasis on frozen and refrigerated foods. Officials say the changes to the fleet so far have upped store traffic and shown a comparable store net sales lift in excess of 10%.
