Jurgens Gets NGA Spirit of America Award

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Grocers Association here said it has presented its Spirit of America Award to Ric Jurgens, chairman and chief executive officer of Hy-Vee Stores, West Des Moines, Iowa.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Grocers Association here said it has presented its Spirit of America Award to Ric Jurgens (right), chairman and chief executive officer of Hy-Vee Stores, West Des Moines, Iowa.

"Ric has been a steadfast leader in our industry for so many years, always leading the way with his vision, innovation and compassion toward others," Peter Larkin, president and CEO of NGA, said in presenting the award. "Not only has our industry benefited greatly from his committment, service and dedication, but so too have Hy-Vee and the customers and communities it serves."

The award, established in 1982, honors key industry and community figures who have provided leadership in the areas of community services and government relations on behalf of a free and independent food distrbiution system. Jurgens received the award at the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association's annual legislative dinner in Lincoln, Neb.

Jurgens has announced plans to retire from Hy-Vee on June 1.
