MONTVALE, N.J. — A&P here has instituted a new policy for verifying age for alcohol and tobacco sales across all of its banner stores. The policy requires that the identification of all shoppers purchasing these items be checked.

Previously store associates were required to make age estimates before deciding whether to do so.

“We respect our customer’s right to choose products which are legal and restricted to adults only,” said A&P in a statement. “As such, this new policy makes the sale of these products seamless and protects our community children.”
