ALBANY, Calif. — Andronico’s Markets will stop selling cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products on Feb. 4. “While tobacco sales are profitable for us, we feel that cigarettes and tobacco products are out of step with our goal of providing sustainable, wholesome, well-crafted products for our customers,” Bill Andronico, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “It’s all part of a rising consciousness at Andronico’s.” The retailer recently stopped selling battery-cage eggs in its stores, in favor of cage-free. “Keep an eye on us for further changes that address environmental and health issues,” said Andronico. “We are making some important changes this year and this is just the beginning.” Earlier this month, Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans announced its adoption of a tobacco-free policy.
