WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Lowes Food Stores is promoting the new Lowes Foods Life Learning Lab at a rehabilitation center at Forsyth Medical Center here.
Created through a grant from Lowes and several of its vendors, including Kraft Foods, the Life Learning Lab is a simulated grocery store that allows patients to develop their cognitive and physical abilities in a safe environment.
The retailer posted pictures of the center on its Facebook page.
The lab is a mini grocery store complete with shelving, produce stands, meat counter, frozen food cases, a bakery section, grocery carts, a check-out line with a cash register, an ATM machine donated by Allegacy and a computer for online ordering.
Physical and occupational therapists will use the lab to help patients with the physical and daily activities of life, such as balance and endurance, money handling, object recognition and problem solving. The hospital’s dietitians also plan to use the lab to help teach healthy eating habits and how to read food labels to identify which foods are best for the patient.
