In time for National Grilling Month, Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace, a specialty market in metropolitan Detroit, has launched a new product line, Northern Smoke Barbecue Sauces. Bottles are available for a suggested retail price of $3.99.

Created by Nino Salvaggio’s director of culinary development, Pete Loren, the sauces were developed from his desire to introduce a high quality and authentic barbecue experience to the market’s customers, especially those who visit the store for its wide selection of top-tier meats.

To determine which flavors would hit store shelves, Loren thought about what would appeal to a larger demographic of customers. “During development, I kept in mind that, in Southeast Michigan, we are very culturally diverse with a variety of different tastes,” says Loren. “That led us to highlight the three most popular and iconic barbeque sauces and regions: Kansas City, Memphis and the Carolinas. Everyone is bound to enjoy at least one of our flavor profiles.”

The first sauce, Sweet and Smoky, “The Kansas City Classic,” provides the sweet and smoky flavor that is preferred by most “northerners.” Next is the more “tomato-forward,” Brown Sugar and Honey, “The Memphis Classic,” with notes of brown sugar and honey, opposed to molasses. Finally, Mustard & Molasses, “The Carolina Classic,” features tangy and spicy mustard alongside sweet flavors garnered from molasses. The Kansas City Classic and The Memphis Classic are available in 20-ounce bottles and The Carolina Classic is available in a 19-ounce bottle.

“Barbecue is a reemerging food trend that keeps reinventing itself, something we get to see first hand in our business,” says Kirk Taylor, president, Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace. “In time for peak grilling season, we wanted to take the opportunity to give our customers the option to take their love of barbecue to the next level. I’m incredibly proud of this product and look forward to launching additional Northern Smoke products in the future.”

Nino Salvaggio currently operates three stores in the Detroit area: Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores and Troy. A fourth location, in Bloomfield Township, is slated to open in Spring 2018.
