ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans will begin restocking its Menu Foods-manufactured store-brand wet pet food this month for the first time since the product was recalled last March. During the weeks since the recall, “Hundreds of our shoppers told us how betrayed they felt,” Wegmans acknowledged in a note posted to consumers on its website. “The most important thing is to regain your confidence that these products, like others under our own brand name, are high quality and safe for consumption.” In June, Wegmans’ pet food buyer, its senior vice president of consumer affairs and its top quality-assurance people visited a Menu Foods pet food plant in Pennsauken, N.J., and deemed it well maintained, secure and as having good manufacturing and safety practices. The retailer also related to shoppers that Menu Foods is no longer getting wheat gluten from China and that it’s testing products for melamine and a host of other substances.
