Mintel: Sodium Reduction a Top CPG Trend

CHICAGO — Sodium reduction will be one of the leading trends for consumer packaged goods manufacturers in 2010, according to research firm Mintel.
Mintel predicts that more CPG marketers will follow in the steps of ConAgra foods, which as pledged to reduce the salt in its products by 20% by 2015. Such actions fill a consumer need, as 51% of U.S. consumers say they always or usually watching their sodium, according to Mintel.
Among other trends, Mintel predicts more CPG companies will put caloric content on front of packaging symbols. Coca-Cola, for instance, has already announced plans to place calories-per-serving and servings-per-container information on the front of all packages for its entire U.S. beverage portfolio.
Nearly half (48%) of consumers say it would help them reduce caloric intake if calories were listed on front of packages, according to Mintel research.
