Safeway's White Jumps to Jamba

Jamba Inc., which owns and franchises Jamba Juice stores, has hired James White as president and chief executive officer. White leaves his position as Safeway's senior vice president of consumer brands for this new position, beginning on Dec. 1, replacing interim President and CEO Steven R. Berrard. Berrard will remain chairman of Jamba's board.

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — Jamba Inc. here, which owns and franchises Jamba Juice stores, has hired James White as president and chief executive officer. White leaves his position as Safeway's senior vice president of consumer brands for this new position, beginning on Dec. 1, replacing interim President and CEO Steven R. Berrard. Berrard will remain chairman of Jamba's board. At Safeway, White has led the company's Lucerne Foods division, presiding over the development of the successful O Organics and Eating Right private-label lines. According to Safeway spokesman Brian Dowling, no one has yet been named to replace White. Prior to his tenure at Safeway, White was senior vice president of business development at Gillette Co., and he previously served in executive positions at Nestlé Purina and Coca-Cola.

WINN-DIXIE NAMES NEW OPS STAFF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores announced last week two promotions and one new hire: Cheryl Forehand was promoted to regional vice president; Shawn Sloan was promoted to vice president of operations; and Rich Cline has joined the company as vice president of operations support. Forehand previously was vice president of operations. She will lead the day-to-day operations of Winn-Dixie's Jacksonville division. Sloan was promoted from director of maintenance and energy management, and will work to strengthen inventory management programs in his new role. Cline most recently served as vice president, store operations, for Pamida, a Omaha, Neb.-based retailer. He previously worked in grocery retail for Jewel-Osco and Albertsons.

GIANT FOOD HIRES NEW IT DIRECTOR

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here announced last week that it has hired Charles Achuff as the company's director of information technology, reporting to Mary Jane Jamrogowicz, vice president of information systems and technology. Achuff, who will oversee vendor delivery and IT hardware infrastructure matters, has previously worked for Intec Billing, EUR Systems, Contel, Alltel Information Services and Diamond Shamrock Corp.

LESHKO SUCCEEDS FLEEMAN AT BLOOM

SALISBURY, N.C. — Bloom Supermarkets said last week it has promoted Troy Leshko to vice president of retail operations, succeeding JJ Fleeman, who is joining parent company Food Lion, a spokeswoman for Bloom told SN. Leshko, a 20-year veteran of Food Lion, most recently was director of strategy and innovation at Bloom. In his new role, Leshko will oversee the operations of more than 60 Bloom stores in four states.

PRICE CHOPPER NAMES FINANCE VP

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets here announced last week that Christina Maltbie has been promoted to the position of vice president, assistant treasurer, reporting directly to John Endres, the company's senior vice president of finance, chief financial officer and treasurer. In this newly created position, Maltbie will oversee check processing, check collection and network settlement, in addition to negotiating contracts with in-store services, including lottery, utility payments and Western Union, for the 116-store chain. Maltbie has worked at Price Chopper since 1998 and previously worked for KPMG as a senior accountant.
